What's this? Fukagawa Hachiman Festival photos by Philbert Ono. Held in mid-August in Koto Ward, Tokyo, this is the festival's full-scale version held once every three years (1996, 1999, 2002, etc.).
Sacred Carriage Procession
Aug. 17, 1996The Sacred Carriage Procession stopped 12 times along its route so that the shrine maidens could perform a Shinto dance on the truck. The procession stopped for about 15 min. each time. A flute and taiko drum accompaniment on another truck also played during the dance. The procession stopped in front of Tomioka Hachimangu Shrine at 1:30 p.m. for the sacred dance called kagurama (pictured above). (Roll your mouse over the above photo to see another photo.)
The shrine provided a map showing the exact route of the procession and the times and locations when it would stop for the sacred dance. If you want to photograph this, you should obtain the map from the shrine.
