What's this? Fukagawa Hachiman Festival photos by Philbert Ono. Held in mid-August in Koto Ward, Tokyo, this is the festival's full-scale version held once every three years (1996, 1999, 2002, etc.).

Prayer Ceremony
Aug. 16, 1996

The Sacred Carriage's portable shrine is being loaded onto a truck. The carriage itself, with wooden wheels, is not used in the actual Sacred Carriage procession. Long poles are used underneath to roll the shrine onto the flatbed truck.

The carriage itself is very ornate. The portable shrine on the truck is fitted and secured in place. The Sacred Carriage Procession would be held the next day.
