What's this? Fukagawa Hachiman Festival photos by Philbert Ono. Held in mid-August in Koto Ward, Tokyo, this is the festival's full-scale version held once every three years (1996, 1999, 2002, etc.).

Deity Transfer from Shrine to Sacred Carriage
(Horen Kojin-sai) Aug. 14, 1996

The head priest (right) holds the divinity high above while taking it to the sacred carriage. When I have the chance, I'll ask someone what exactly he's carrying. It must be some kind of container. And the divinity itself, what is it? A small mirror? (If anybody knows, please add your comment in my guestbook.)

The head priest arrives at the storehouse where the horen sacred carriage is parked. The sacred carriage bears a portable shrine. The priest will go behind the carriage and climb onto the portable shrine to install the deity. Three days later, the horen sacred carriage's portable shrine will be hauled around the shrine's neighborhoods for the Sacred Carriage procession.
