About locations: When
listings are categorized according to geographical area, Tokyo
is always at the top of the list, followed by Osaka and Kyoto.
Then you may see the remaining prefectures listed or just Other Locations.
You might also see Northern Japan (Hokkaido, Aomori, Iwate,
Akita, Yamagata, Fukushima, and Niigata), Central Japan (Chiba,
Tochigi, Gunma, Nagano, Yamanashi, Shizuoka, Toyama, Fukui, Ishikawa, Gifu,
Aichi), Western Japan (Shiga, Mie, Wakayama, Nara, Hyogo, Okayama,
Hiroshima, Shimane, Yamaguchi, Kagawa, Tokushima, Kochi, Ehime), and Southern
Japan (Fukuoka, Nagasaki, Saga, Kumamoto, Oita, Miyazaki, Kagoshima,
Okinawa). Most addresses are provided in both Japanese and English.
About phone numbers:
All phone numbers are for calling within Japan. To call from outside
Japan, dial Japan's country code (81), then the local area code without
dialing the first zero. For example, to call or fax (03) 3280-0033 (Tokyo),
dial 81-3-3280-0033. In DirectoryZONE, the phone number's local area code is
indicated in parentheses. It need not be dialed if you are in that area. For
example, if you are within the 23 wards of Tokyo, you need not dial the 03.
Also, toll-free numbers (usually starts with 0120)
work only within Japan. Note that most people in Japan cannot speak English,
so be prepared to communicate in Japanese.
National holidays:
Museums and businesses may be closed on the following days: New Year's Day
(Jan. 1), 2nd Mon. in Jan. (Coming-of-Age Day), Feb. 11 (National Founding Day),
Mar. 21 (Vernal Equinox), Apr. 29 (Showa Day), May 3 (Constitution Day),
May 4 (Children's Day), July 20 (Marine Day), Sep. 15 (Respect-for-the-Aged
Day), Sep. 23 (Autumnal Equinox), 2nd Mon. in Oct. (Sports Day), Nov. 3 (Culture
Day), Nov. 23 (Labor Thanksgiving Day), and Dec. 23 (Emperor's Birthday). If
a national holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday becomes the holiday.
Also, the year end and New Year's period refers to the last
few days of the year (around Dec. 28-31) and the first few days of the year
(around Jan. 1-4). Note that Dec. 25 is not a national holiday in Japan.
