Impressions: PhotoGuide Japan organized and held its very first public event called Tokyo International Photo Showcase 1999 (TIPS '99) on Oct. 23, 1999 at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography Hall in Yebisu Garden Place, Tokyo. It was a slide show delivered by five Japan-based male and female photographers (three American and two Japanese). The purpose of this one-of-a-kind, English-speaking event was to showcase the work of talented photographers and to provide an opportunity for people (especially English speakers) interested in photography to gather and meet. From 2 PM to 5 PM on that sunny, balmy Saturday afternoon, up to 136 people filled the beautiful, 190-seat hall in Japan's largest photography museum. A full report on TIPS '99 will be coming soon. Admission was free, but the TIPS '99 Program was sold for 1,000 yen and a set of postcards for 500 yen. The program includes a Welcome message from the organizer, bios and sample photos by the five photographers, FAQ, and advertisements. Although the event is over, the Program is still useful with a comprehensive English list of photo galleries and museums in Japan. It also includes photo maps of Ginza, Shinjuku, and Shibuya showing the locations of photo galleries, camera shops, and bookstores. The maps are better quality than those found in PhotoGuide Japan and more practical than printing the Web site's maps. The layout design is superb, and high-quality paper and printing were used. Be sure to also see the TIPS '99 Report. 200-4 |
