Impressions: This magazine has been around for over 20 years serving as a window to Japan's entertainment world. It used to center on geinokai (entertainment) news and personalities. But now, it devotes a substantial number of pages to Japanese culture as well. If you're interested in Japanese pop idols and entertainment (TV and movies), this magazine will keep you abreast of the happenings (including celebrity marriages, divorces, scandals, etc.) in Japanese entertainment. It features articles about popular TV dramas, actors and actresses, pop idols and singers, and a celebrity gossip column. In addition, there are travel articles, book reviews, and a mail order service for videos and CDs. It's a thin but cheap magazine. It came in really handy when I was in college in Hawaii preparing myself for life in Japan. Eye-Ai is well known in Hawaii, especially among the Japanese-Americans. In the early 1990s, I was a regular writer for the magazine writing mainly travel or sumo articles each month. These days I write for the magazine only when I really want to (once every few years). The Jan. 2002 issue (see the cover image above) features my article about Yokozuna Akebono's retirement. The magazine is sold at Kinokuniya Bookstores in Japan and at most bookshops where Japanese books are sold outside Japan. International subscriptions and back issues are also available.
