Impressions: This magazine is what I want to do in English. Perhaps call it "ArtGuide Japan." But there's no way I can do it, even for a Web site. It's just too much work. But that does not deter Kotomiz Helio, the editor and publisher of this handy little publication that started in May 1998. I met him a few months ago, and I was impressed by his determination and preserverance in the publishing business.

His thin, little monthly magazine is full of information on art exhibitions (including some photography) and galleries in Tokyo. If you can read Japanese and like to visit art galleries in Tokyo, get this magazine. It is enormously helpful for you to decide which exhibition to see and where to go. There are maps of the galleries as well. He also provides numerous thumbnail-size photos of sample works of many exhibitions.

The galleries send him a press release and photo and he puts them all together in a neat, easy-to-read format in the magazine. It's pretty much a one-man operation and a full-time thing. He says that he's operating slightly in the black. Obviously he's not doing it to make money. It's a labor of love (something which I understand very well). He is doing a very valuable service for the art community.

In May 2001, an English version of the magazine was produced in PDF format by Edan Corkill. He has done a wonderful job in translating and laying out the magazine in English. See it at http://www.h3.dion.ne.jp/〜etc.e/index.htm. (Reviewed by Philbert Ono)
